World Resources Forum 2019
Duration: -
Location: Centre International de Conferences (CICG), Geneva

Towards an integrated sustainable resource management

The attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement will require increasing amounts of raw materials, amongst others technological metals, to meet basic global needs such as clean energy, mobility, and free access to information. A secure raw materials supply base is thus one of the basic conditions for sustainable development. At the same time, these raw materials have to be acquired sustainably – otherwise, sustainability achievements will be compromised. Potential bottlenecks must be considered across the entire value chain, addressing raw materials, processing capacities, semi-finished as well as finished products. Mitigation measures to ensure sustainable future supply have to be taken today. Innovative approaches are required to tackle technology and business-related issues in mining, processing and recycling, but also to deal with aspects of social responsibility and ecological impact.

Reliable data and effective policy interventions can only be developed in a defined framework and require the improved collaboration of all involved actors in a systematic and transparent approach. One globally accepted framework for assessing resources on a variety of levels is the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) which is currently broadening its focus towards an integrated Resource Management System. The workshop shall

  1. continue the discussion started at WRF 2017 on critical raw materials and sustainable development,
  2. highlight the future need for raw materials for attaining the SDGs,
  3. present recent developments towards sustainable sourcing and waste reduction, discuss possible ways forward
  4. to use UNFC as a comprehensive standard for sustainable resource management.

The programme will be as follows:

Part 1 (Chairs H. Tulsidas, R. Gauss): 8:30-10:00

Material need for sustainable development
Presentations of initiatives for sustainable sourcing and integrated resource management

Part 2 (Chairs A. Hool, J. Hilton): 12:00-14:00

The United Nations Resource Management System
Ways forward: short perspective presentations and panel discussion
Wrap-up and further steps

The workshop ist organized by Alessandra Hool, ESM Foundation, Harikrishnan Tulsidas, UNECE and Roland Gauss, EIT Raw Materials.

Short Course on Resources Management

On 22 October, EIT Raw Materials and the International Raw Materials Observatory will co-organise an “Executive Short Course on Resources Management using the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources”. This one-day course on the UNFC is designed for senior policymakers and industry leaders from the public and private sector and will be held at the Centre International de Conferences (CICG) in Geneva, Switzerland. It will provide the know-how and insights required to work towards better management and governance of oil, gas, mineral and anthropogenic resources and contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. At the end of the course, the participants will be able to use the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) as a resources’ management tool.

Registration for the course is now open and we invite you to sign up as soon as possible as places are distributed on a first-come-first-served basis and only 20 seats are available. Registration is free of charge for all EIT Raw Materials partners and European Geologist title holders. Please register now here.

The short course is organised back-to-back with the World Resources Forum (WRF) 2019 which will be held from 23 to 24 October 2019 at the Centre International de Conferences (CICG) in Geneva, Switzerland. WRF 2019 will be centred on the theme of ‘Anchoring Natural Resources and Raw Materials Management for Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production’.
