Talk: Current critical raw materials policies and their impacts
Join the talk of Alessa Hool with focus especially on the European Critical Raw Materials Act, its relation to policies in other countries (e.g. US, Japan, Korea) and how its more protectionist and centralised policies could impact industry dynamics, local stakeholders, as well as international relations at the session “Securing access to Critical Raw Materials (CRMs)” as part of the 32nd Session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy on September 13, 2023. Tage der Technik 2023 – Resource scarcity as a driver of innovation
Participation of Alessandra Hool at “Tage der Technik 2023” on the topic Strategic raw materials for “Switzerland of the future” The demand for raw materials for modern technologies, especially for low-emission energy generation and storage, is growing rapidly. The EU has defined raw materials such as lithium or rare earth metals as “strategic” since a regulation proposed in March 2023; subjecting them to special security regulations in the future. The international race for raw materials can have an impact on research and development, as well as on industries that do not import raw materials in pure form, but semi-finished products or components. Particularly in the field of circular economy, Switzerland could create an active instrument for resource security that is also ecologically and socially sustainable. Tage der Technik

TecDays 2022
The TecDay is a special occasion on which Swiss high school students can get in touch with experts in various scientific areas, have fun and also get interested in science. They can choose three from a large variety of modules in which experts will present a scientific topic in a way students can relate with. The modules have a strong practical relevance. Many also include experiments and explanations with models or small project work. However, the focus is on the exchange with experts from industry, universities, research institutes and non-profit organizations. ESM is also present with a module on critical raw materials and plays the board game “In the Loop” with the students. The aim of the game is to bring them closer to how we deal with raw materials and to show them the complexity of their global value chains. For the first half of 2022, modules are planned for the TecDays at the high schools in Aarau (March 1st), Bellinzona (March 15th) and Zurich (July 8th). Like the previous TecDays, it is organised by our partner SATW.

Massive Open Online course SusCritMOOC
On 13th of October, our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with the name “Critical Raw Materials: Managing Resources for a Sustainable Future” launched officially on edX. The course provides a systemic understanding of CRMs and equips you with tools and strategies for managing them in a sustainable way. The course covers the entire raw materials’ value chain, which help see what actions can be taken at every stage and how you can make informed decisions, and contribute to and benefit from a more sustainable approach to CRMs, regardless of your professional or academic background. Key topics include access to raw materials, environmental and social impacts, geopolitical factors, market dynamics, economics, supply chains, global trends in CRM use, and resource efficiency. You can choose from three different tracks that cover possible solutions from a technical, business or policy perspective. These range from supply risk mitigation, exploration, urban mining and substitution to circularity strategies, business models, responsible sourcing and certification. This course also introduces you to experts, start-ups and projects in the field and inspires you to tackle problems with concrete initiatives. You can register for the upcoming self-paced version of the course on edX.org. For information about SusCritMat in general, you […]

We will follow up on this with the participants after abstract submissions.
IRTC Business virtual workshop and Round Table
Building resilient economies – the role of policy IRTC-Business virtual workshop and Round Table, November 17, 2020 In the framework of the European Commission’s Raw Materials Week Mitigation actions for raw materials supply risks range from those that are effective on company level to those that necessitate coordinated government action. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that companies’ ranges of action can be limited when it comes to large-scale disruptions on a global scale. Firms can hardly protect their supply chains from events of global magnitudes. The probability of supply disruptions is difficult to predict due to its dynamic nature and the wide range of potentially relevant supply risk factors. However, the study of supply risk factors can help to identify vulnerabilities of current global economic systems. In order to mitigate potential risks, it can be helpful to focus on the development of more resilient supply chains that have a lower vulnerability to large-scale disruptions and distortions. There is a role of both companies and policymakers to anticipate possible bottlenecks and find solutions to mitigate supply disruptions in mid or long-term time frames to limit economic and social damage. In times of crises, governments take a more decisive role, and […]
